THE FUTURE STATE

REDEVELOPMENT, MASSIVE INFRASTRUCTURE INVESTMENT,

SUPERB QUALITY OF LIFE

.

The latest (mid-2014 est.) population estimate for the City of Sheffield was 563,749 residents. This represents an increase of about 17,000 people, since the last census in 2001.

During the 21st. century the city has undergone a population growth way above that of the national average, and is projected to increase to over 600,000 by 2020.

The City, as is stated many times, is a part of an unconfined, interconnected and complex (systemic) web.

In tandem with the multi-billion pound investment during the present time resulting in massive innovation across all sectors, we have to consider the central questions; what does the future hold and what of the impact upon our particular responsibility?

We can say that the changes in motion are impacting lives with rich, prosperous and multifaceted content and will continue so to do.

.THE CITY CENTRE

MASTER PLAN

Heart of the City II is part of a £470m plan for hotels, shops, a food hall, public spaces and accommodation for the area behind Pinstone Street. Sheffield City Council said it decided to keep more historic buildings following a public consultation. The work could be finished by 2024, said the council’s cabinet member for business and investment, Mazher Iqbal. It will build on the first phase, a flagship HSBC building which is already being built on the site of the former Grosvenor Hotel. In the plan, a triangular area stretching 1.5 million sq. ft. (139,000 sq. m.) from Pinstone Street to Devonshire Street and Fargate will be redeveloped. Stuart Harris, from developer Queensberry, said that stunning architectural buildings would be re-used, the existing street layout will be kept, and Leah’s Yard on Cambridge Street will be re-purposed. The existing street layout will also be kept and John Lewis will remain in its current Barker’s Pool location, where it has been since 1963.

The city centre will look altogether different but is also going to be respectful of Sheffield’s heritage buildings.

A multi-million pound plan for the new retail quarter becoming reality.

Sheffield Council will spend £55m purchasing the remaining properties in a key area of the city centre between Pinstone Street, Moorhead and Barkers Pool.

The new £300m plan, which will create 2,500 jobs, will see the area transformed.

The first phase will be complete by 2019.

The Digital Campus Phase III scheme creates a model urban mixed-use development which is a dynamic addition to Sheffield’s city centre. The site lies at the southern edge of the recently-completed Sheaf Square which fronts Sheffield Station and provides a new gateway to the city centre. Responding to this prime location, the scheme creates a striking addition to the city-scape and accommodates a mix of uses to animate the surrounding area and spur ongoing regeneration.

With a plan based on a triangular geometry, the concave northern edge of the building completes the established sweep of the public square. The building is raised on giant structural legs which contain cores and plant space and are fronted by a range of retail units at ground level. Elevating the building in this way draws Sheaf Square through the site and creates a dramatic public space sheltered beneath a double-height vaulted roof. From here, a series of escalators lead up to six floors of accommodation providing 220,000ft² of premium office space within flexible floor plates.

ADVANCED MANUFACTURING RESEARCH CENTRE (AMRC) – see more on page three *

The AMRC has eleven core capabilities which include integrated manufacturing, design and prototyping, additive manufacturing and virtual reality. It is also home to the AMRC’s Integrated Manufacturing Group (IMG).

IMG’s work spans robotics and automation, integrated large volume metrology, digitally assisted assembly and manufacturing informatics. Among other things, the Group is developing ways of meeting demand for high variation and mass customisation, intelligent machines and processes that monitor and optimise their operations, techniques to shorten lead times and ramp production up and down rapidly, ways of handling and making sense of big data, human machine collaboration and techniques for digitally assisted assembly.
